- Day Trips from Mostar
First, we’ll give you a bit of background on the history of Mostar. Then all things logistics, the usual “stay, see, do & eat” and ideas for awesome day trips from Mostar. Mostar is one of the most visited cities in Bosnia & Herzegovina, but is definitely not high on the most visited cities in Europe. It’s still pretty much a hidden gem. Now is the perfect time to visit!
A glance into the history of Mostar and Bosnia & Herzegovina
Mostar is the fifth biggest city in Bosnia & Herzegovina, a country located in the western Balkan Peninsula of eastern Europe. Situated in the Herzegovina region of the country, Mostar enjoys Mediterranean climate and also happens to be the sunniest city in the country.
After World War II, during the time of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the city flourished and the economy saw significant growth. However, the rise was short-lived. In 1992, Bosnia & Herzegovina (among other countries), declared independence from Yugoslavia. The next 3 years saw the city being shelled to the ground, with around 2,000 deaths in the city itself and thousands more in the rest of the country.
Since the end of the war in 1995, the city and also the country has been in continuous reconstruction. Walking through the streets of Mostar, you can still see the bullet covered walls of run-down buildings and houses, in between the modern buildings. Every single Bosnian has had their life impacted one way or the other as a result of the war. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Bosnians are so humble and kind. They have seen the tragedy caused by the evils of humanity.
How to get to Mostar
The most convenient way to travel around Bosnia is via a rental car. For the sake of completeness, I will include public transport and how to fly to Bosnia as well.
Flying to Bosnia & Herzegovina
While there aren’t that many airlines that fly into Bosnia, there is still enough to make the country accessible. Some of the airlines (that you may know) that fly into Bosnia include Austrian Airlines, Croatian Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Norwegian, Wizzair, Turkish Airlines, Fly Dubair and Qatar Airways. All of these airlines fly to Sarajevo, the capital city of the country. A few fly to Mostar.
Driving to Mostar with a Rental Car
First thing to mention when driving in the Balkans is that you need a Green Insurance Card. We hired our car from Dubrovnik airport from a company called CarWiz via rentalcars.com. We made sure that they included the green card with our booking as we planned to drive to Montenegro and BiH. This was done once we got to the car rental at the airport and we had to pay extra for it. Unfortunately for the life of me I cannot remember how much I paid extra 🙁

Again there are a couple of routes that you can take when going to Mostar from Kotor. The most suggested route is through Trebinje via Granični border crossing. But we decided to take the Vraćenovići border crossing. From our experience, we did not encounter a long queue via this route. However, there were some roads that were under construction. Trains from Dubrovnik to Mostar
There are no direct trains available from Dubrovnik to Mostar. If you really wanted to take a train, then you would first need to drive or take a bus to Čapljina and then take the train from there. The bus that goes to Čapljina is the same one that goes to Mostar and there is not a big difference in price if you take the ticket to Čapljina or Mostar. So I would recommend that you take the bus direct to Mostar instead of to Čapljina and then taking the train. Unless you want to do a stopover in Čapljina then the train times from Čapljina to Mostar are below.

Things to do in Mostar
Visit Denis in his cafe called Bastan Mostar
This was definitely the highlight of our trip to Mostar. Initially we went to climb the minaret in the mosque for the views of Mostar but as we approached, we saw a sign board that said “naturally chill space”. Amused and intrigued, we go to the café to have a sheesha and have a “naturally chill time”. The owner of the café, Denis, told us that he was closing up shop soon and that we would be his last customers for the day. And how lucky we were!
Denis was a treasure trove of stories about BiH. We learned more about BiH through him than from any research we did before the trip. The entire evening was spent listening to stories about the war, Emina, the most famous Bosnian poem (we wrote a whole blog post about it here) and many more. We even ended up helping him close up shop for the night.
I highly recommend visiting here and if you’re nice to him maybe he might tell you all about it as well. This experience was worth more than any other attraction in and around Mostar for us.
Climb the minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque
Just next to Denis’s cafe’ is the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque. Climb the minaret for some of the best views of Mostar. The total price to enter the mosque, it’s garden and the minaret is 12KM (£5) at the time of writing. I believe if you just want to see the mosque and gardens it is cheaper. But to be honest the mosque it self is not that spectacular. The price is high compared to BiH but that also means that not many people go up the minaret because of this. So if you want 360° view of Mostar, this is your best choice.
Stari Most “Old Bridge”
This 24m high bridge is one of the most iconic attractions in the whole of BiH. As with most things in this beautiful country, it does have a tragic story. It was destroyed during the Croat-Bosniak war in 1993 after being there for 427 years. Luckily, it was reconstructed with stone sourced from the source quarry and using 16th century building techniques. This ensured authenticity was maintained.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby with magnificent views of the bridge. We stopped by one of those and had a massive Ćevapi each. Another cool thing that happens on the bridge is the jumpers on the bridge.
Day Trips from Mostar
There are plenty of amazing places near Mostar that can be done as day trips. You can even squeeze in multiple sites in a day. We did Pocitelj and Kravice waterfalls in one day.
Kravice Waterfalls
Situated on the Trebižat river, this is a popular destination not only among tourists, but locals as well. Mostly popular during the summer months when the waters are warmer. When we went there it was pretty crowded. It’s great for a dip and people of all swimming abilities can enjoy this place.
Entrance Fee to Kravice Waterfalls
- Adults
- June to September: 20 KM (£9)
- October to May: 10 KM (£5)
- Student between the ages of 7 – 18 years
- 5 KM through out the year (£2)
- Free entry for children below 7 years
For more prices on canoe hire, bicycle hire etc… have a look at the official website HERE.
How to get to Kravice Waterfalls
Getting here with public transport is not the easiest. You have to take a taxi at some point even if you’re taking a bus or train. Buses stop at either Čapljina or Medjugorje and trains stop at Čapljina.
Taxi Prices from Čapljina and Medjugorje to Kravice
Price from both Čapljina and Medjugorje are around 20KM one way. I found an online taxi company in Medjugorje that you can book in advance but it is quoting about €15 or 29 KM. Link here.
Bus to Kravice Waterfalls
You can take the bus to either Čapljina or Medjugorje and take a taxi from there. I would recommend taking the Čapljina route as this means that you can stop at Pocitelj on the way.

Blagaj Monastery
This picteresque 600 year old Dervish (Sufi sect of Islam) monastery is one of the places that we really wanted to go but couldn’t. It is beautifully nestled at the base of a cliff at the springs of Buna river.

The Fallen Bridge on the Neretva
Google Maps Location of the Bridge
If you’re going to Blidinje Nature Park via Jablanica, then make sure you visit this bridge. Originally built in 1888, this bridge was blown up twice before being blown up for the last time.
The first time was during the 2nd World War, when Yugoslav Partisans destroyed part of the bridge in an attempt to mislead the Axis Powers into thinking they were not crossing the Neretva river. It was destroyed in a way that from the air it looked like it was totally unusable. When the Axis Powers changed their plans after this the Partisans quickly rebuilt the bridge and started attacking. Unfortunately, the Luftwaffe then bombarded the bridge and destroyed it for a second time.
The third time it was destroyed was in 1969 for a Yugoslavian movie. They wanted to recreate a realistic scene about the events of the war. According to AtlasObscura, none of the actual shots made it to the movie and instead they ended up shooting the scene with a scale replica.
If you go there, make sure to check out the museum dedicated to Wounded at the Battle of Neretva. Renovated in 2013, the museum chronologically follows the events related to the preparation, beginning and duration of the battle. We didn’t know about this place until we met a Bosnian couple in a cafe near river Jablanica

Bookmarked! My kids (12 and 16) and I will be backpacking from Budapest to Dubrovnik with many stops along the way. Having this guide in regards to buses and trains to help me navigate our travels from Sarajevo to Mostar and onward to Dubrovnik is awesome! Thank you so much!
With this said, any qualms about a mom traveling with kids by bus/train in this part of Europe?
Oh wow, I love reading about people’s travels! Yours is fascinating!
Thank you! I wish I could say I enjoy writing about it but I much prefer the travelling part rather than the writing part! x
Fantastic post! Extremely informative! We have it on our list of places to visit.
Thanks! Glad it helped!
Wow this is a great guide! I’ve been to Dubrovnik and Kotor but haven’t made it up to Mostar yet. It’s very popular in the blogger-sphere though so I’d love to go!
Thanks a lot! Lockdown has given me a lot more time to come up with an extensive guide 😁 BiH is our absolute fav destination. Planning on writing a lot more content on it x
